My First Year In The Recruitment Industry: An Exceptional Journey That Is Not For Everyone #TheStonehouseWay

July 16, 2025

If I were to choose a single adjective to describe my first year in the recruitment industry, it would be ‘relentless’. Yes, it has been a challenging ride at times, but equally, it has been an enlightening experience that offers immense gratification. Recruitment isn’t for everyone – it requires unwavering determination, an insatiable appetite to learn, boundless passion, and a considerable amount of hard graft. But that doesn’t mean to say these things can’t be enjoyed, and if you’re willing to put in the work you will feel the rewards tenfold.

My job as a Recruitment Consultant is no 9-5 role and requires investing significant time beyond standard office hours. Yet, when I reflect on my first year, the most crucial thing I’ve learnt is the importance of identifying what motivates you. Without having a clear mission that drives you to go the extra mile and be resilient in demanding circumstances, the relentless cycle can quickly wear you down.

For me, my driving force initially were the normal things. To be able to give the ones I love the things they deserve, take care of my family when they need it and to be good at something I enjoy. What I have realised is that I do enjoy the job, connecting with different people all day every day feeds the soul. Being a part of something that is growing, having a say in how this great company is being shaped is another thing I’ve come to find as a motivator. Knowing these things drive me, as well as some more personal goals, really help me during the difficult conversations, missed deals and late finishes.

Who You Work With Definitely Matters

A significant aspect that has made this journey easier, even during tough moments, is the fantastic company I get to keep – both within my team and from the vast pool of talented candidates and clients I’ve had the opportunity to engage with.

There have been some tough moments, hard truths to learn and difficult conversations with people. But having the support I do at work has made me re-think the professional workspace. Sometimes before, as I imagine a lot of people have felt, at the heart of a job I knew that I was there to fill a seat and do a job. Whereas now I feel valued not just because of the good work I do, but because of who I am as a person.

Recruitment is, after all, a people-centered sector. The whole point of my job is to bring people together. I’ve met some wonderful people I genuinely consider to be my friends and I’ve had the pleasure of placing people where they have been extremely happy.

Sohan always says, it’s not the journey that’s important, but the people you take with you. And I agree, nothing is truly worth experiencing without your friends.

Conclusion and Looking Forward

Looking forward, my inspiration gears towards establishing myself as a go-to Recruitment Consultant. I aspire to elevate my professional profile as a trusted voice in the industry, setting myself apart from competitors. I hope to achieve this by continuing in the ways that have made me successful and well recommended so far, but always by taking feedback and finding out how I can improve.

Invaluable lessons have been learned in my first year of recruitment – lessons that I am eager to share with others who are considering embarking on this fulfilling path. In the future, I look forward to engaging more with you all and growing our professional network.

Until then, keep persevering and remember: With hard work, determination and a clear sense of what motivates you, successful results are never far off.
