Senior Environmental Health Officer (Private Sector Housing)

Initial 3-Month Contract (Potential for Extension)
£45.00 – £50.00 per Hour (Umbrella)
On-site Working – 4 Days per Week (from September 2026)

We are currently partnering with a Local Authority in Essex to recruit an experienced Senior Environmental Health Officer for an initial 3-month contract, with the possibility of extension.

As part of the Private Sector Housing team, you will be responsible for delivering a broad range of housing enforcement duties, ensuring compliance with current housing legislation, and supporting the implementation of upcoming legislative changes.

The successful candidate will have experience in:

  • Undertaking HHSRS inspections and hazard assessments
  • Serving Improvement Notices and carrying out housing enforcement activities
  • HMO licensing, inspections, and compliance
  • Issuing civil penalties and supporting legal proceedings where required
  • Managing private sector housing enforcement cases from initial complaint through to resolution
  • Providing guidance and support to junior officers and trainees
  • Applying housing legislation, including the Renters’ Rights Act 2025

This role requires an experienced officer who can confidently manage their own caseload, carry out property inspections, determine appropriate enforcement action, and provide specialist advice on private sector housing standards within a local authority environment.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience within Private Sector Housing or Environmental Health for a Local Authority
  • Strong working knowledge of the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS)
  • Experience with HMO licensing, inspections, and enforcement
  • Ability to independently manage cases from inspection through to formal enforcement
  • Degree or Diploma in Environmental Health (desirable)
  • Environmental Health Registration Board (EHRB) registration (desirable)
