Trading Standards Officer
Location: North West
Working Pattern: 2 days in the office / 3 days working from home
Contract: Initial 12 weeks, with potential for extension
Stonehouse are currently supporting a Local Authority in the North West who are looking to appoint an experienced Trading Standards Officer on an initial 12-week contract.
The successful candidate will be responsible for a broad range of Trading Standards activity, with a particular focus on Food Standards and Weights & Measures. The role will involve carrying out statutory duties, investigating matters of non-compliance and supporting businesses and residents in meeting their legal obligations.
Alongside the regulatory work, you will also have the opportunity to coach and mentor three apprentices, helping to develop their practical knowledge and experience within Trading Standards.
The Role
You will be responsible for:

Undertaking statutory Trading Standards duties across Food Standards and Weights & Measures.

Carrying out inspections, investigations and enforcement activity in line with relevant legislation.

Responding to complaints, enquiries and referrals relating to Trading Standards matters.

Assessing compliance and determining the appropriate course of action where breaches are identified.

Preparing reports, statements, notices and other relevant enforcement documentation.

Providing clear and practical regulatory advice to businesses, residents and other stakeholders.

Maintaining accurate records and case files throughout investigations.

Working collaboratively with colleagues and partner organisations where required.

Supporting the development of three Trading Standards apprentices through coaching, mentoring and practical guidance.
About You
We are seeking a qualified and experienced Trading Standards professional who can confidently undertake statutory functions and work across both Food Standards and Weights & Measures.
The ideal candidate will have:

Previous experience working within a Local Authority Trading Standards environment.

Strong working knowledge of Food Standards and Weights & Measures legislation.

Practical experience of inspections, investigations and regulatory enforcement.

The ability to independently manage Trading Standards cases from initial enquiry through to resolution.

Experience producing enforcement documentation and maintaining appropriate case records.

Strong communication skills and the ability to provide clear advice to businesses and members of the public.

Previous experience mentoring, coaching or supporting apprentices or junior officers would be beneficial.

A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle, where required.
This is an initial 12-week contract, with the possibility of an extension depending on service requirements and approval from the Local Authority’s senior leadership team.
